SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Ethan Riley hit three of his four 3-pointers in the second half to lead a comeback by the Tigers, but a balanced attack by the visiting Bulldogs was too much in the nonleague game.

“We cut it to 10 a couple of times, and he was kind of our spark plug,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “They had a really good first half, and we had a horrible first half. We changed the tempo (played faster) in the second half.”

Nine players scored for Sandpoint in its season opener, led by Darren Bailey with 11 points and Rusty Lee with 10.

“That’s a good basketball team; they’re going to push some people,” Menti said of the Bulldogs, who led 33-14 at halftime.

Zach Yetter added 13 points for Timberlake (0-2).

“Post Falls outplayed us bad in the third quarter,” said Mullan coach Paul Elston, whose team trailed 47-34 after three quarters before outscoring the Trojans 30-12 in the fourth quarter. “We had to extend our defense and kind of work our way back into it.
