PREP FOOTBALL: Timberlake, Lakeside fall in openers

| August 29, 2020 1:23 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — James Billingsley and Zack Yetter scored two touchdowns each for Timberlake in the first half, but South Fremont was able to hold the Tigers scoreless in the second half of a 41-28 win in the season opener for both schools on Friday at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium.

“We both had a really tough time getting a stop in the first half,” said Timberlake coach Kelly Amos, who began his second stint as coach after the retirement of Roy Albertson during the offseason. “Their quarterback was able to throw and they made some plays in the second half. It was a good game, with both offenses playing solid in the first half. We just didn’t answer the bell in the second half.”

Individual statistics were not available.

Friday’s game was played in front of parents of players only due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No students or pep band was allowed.

“It was fantastic to be out on the field again,” Amos said. “The crowd was sparse, but it’s hard not having the students and band there. It was definitely quieter than normal.”

Timberlake visits Lakeland next Friday.

PLUMMER — Luke Trogden ran for 201 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers in a 70-36 win over the Knights.

“It was definitely the first game for both of us,” said Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman, whose team forced five turnovers, but committed four of its own in the game. “We’re both very young teams, but Mullan made a few less mistakes and a few more big plays.”

After taking a 24-22 lead after the first quarter, Mullan-St. Regis running back Adam Ball scored four touchdowns — all in the second quarter — to give Mulaln a 56-22 halftime lead.

“We had some guys go down and they kind of opened it up,” Dohrman said. “We had a better second half and I was proud of their effort.”

Tucker Sanchez threw for 143 yards for Lakeside, which faces Lewis County next Saturday in Nezperce starting at 1 p.m.

Mullan-St. Regis faces Wallace next Friday in Silverton.
