COEUR d’ALENE — At the end of the day, they were just glad to be back.

And with a win to boot.

Miles Jones scored two goals as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 4-1 in the nonleague opener for both Inland Empire League programs at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Friday.

Tyler Allred had five saves for Lake City, which opens IEL play at Lewiston on Tuesday.

“It’s been a challenging year with no spring season, no preseason, no jamboree and one less week to practice before the first game, but we were excited to have the opportunity to play high school sports again and get back to normal,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We started off a little slow against a tough and well-coached Sandpoint team, but managed to get a goal to take the lead going into the half. We played well defensively and made some tactical and positional changes at halftime that improved our midfield. I’m proud of the way the boys played, and like the rest of District 1, just glad to be back out there again.”

Sandpoint hosts Post Falls on Tuesday.

SANDPOINT — In the first sporting event on the new artificial turf at War Memorial Field, Aspen Larson’s goal three minutes into the second half lifted the host Bulldogs, last year’s state 4A champions, past the Timberwolves, a state 5A qualifier last year, in the nonleague season opener for both Inland Empire League teams.

Lake City tied the game at 1 in the 24th minute when Georgia Whitehead stole a pass in the midfield and dribbled all the way to the front of the Sandpoint net. She then sent a ball past the outstretched arm of Hattie Larson to tie the game.

“I am ecstatic,” Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said. “I think I’m the most excited of anyone in our squad right now, probably just because I know the history. Lake City is one of the best programs in the state every year, no question.”

Lake City plays host to Lewiston on Tuesday in the league opener.

Sandpoint is scheduled to play at Post Falls on Tuesday.

First half — 1, Spt, Kylie Williams (Jordie Breeden), 19:00. 1, LC, Georgia Whitehead, 24:00. Second half — 2, Spt, Aspen Larson (Jordie Breeden), 43:00.
