Driver going 100 mph blames grandma

A driver pulled over by Coeur d’Alene police said he had a good reason for speeding: He was trying to get to his ill grandmother.

Only, turns out, she wasn’t sick at all. But she was mad after being awakened by emergency medical responders checking on her.

According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, a patrol sergeant on Monday observed a vehicle going over 100 mph on Government Way southbound from Wilbur. He was able to catch him at the red light at Kathleen Avenue and Government Way and conducted a traffic stop.

“The male immediately said he was trying to get to his grandmother who was having a medical issue,” the KCSO report said. “However, she was in Spokane Valley and he was turning eastbound on Kathleen and had not called for EMS to respond to her.”

A background check found that the driver’s license was suspended for many reasons. He also reportedly had marijuana and paraphernalia in the car.

“And it turns out, his grandmother was sleeping at home and mad that EMS woke her up and she was not having any medical issues,” the report said.

The male was charged with driving without privileges, reckless driving, and obstructing.
