Mine disaster memorial, school events canceled

| April 24, 2020 1:00 AM

On May 2, you’ll be able to observe the 48th anniversary of the Sunshine Mine Disaster, which claimed the lives of 91 men.

You’ll just have to do it from home.

Organizers of the annual event have canceled the memorial observance due to the pandemic and Idaho’s stay-at-home order. Other years, the observance has taken place in the Silver Valley at the memorial statue near Exit 54.

On May 2, 1972, fire broke out in the Kellogg mine. The 91 victims died of smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning.
