Bayley ties for fifth in Outlaw Tour

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Former Lakeland High star Derek Bayley finished tied for fifth in an Outlaw Tour golf event this week at Arrowhead Country Club.

Bayley, who played at Washington State before turning professional in 2019, finished at 8-under-par 202, shooting rounds of 66-70-66.

Alex Cejka, with nearly $18 million in combined earnings on the PGA Tour and European Tour, shot a 14-under 196, including a 6-under 64 in the final round, to win by two strokes.

Those tours, along with most pro tours, are on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, and sometimes those pros will enter events like Outlaw Tour events to stay sharp.

Vandal Scramble honoring

Dennis Erickson postponed to 2021

HAYDEN LAKE — The 2020 Hayden Lake Country Club Vandal Scramble honoring former Vandals football coach Dennis Erickson has been postponed in accordance with health and safety guidelines under the current concerns over COVID-19, the University of Idaho announced.

The event is rescheduled for May 22, 2021.

This year’s event was scheduled for May 16.

The Vandals recently announced that the majority of summer VSF events remain on the schedule for 2020 and will be regularly monitored as the COVID-19 situation continues to unfold.

Zags announce addition of

grad transfer guard Cook

SPOKANE — Aaron Cook, a transfer from Southern Illinois, signed a financial aid agreement to attend Gonzaga and will join the men’s basketball team for the 2020-21 season, the Zags announced.

Cook, a 6-2 185-pound guard, will graduate from Southern Illinois. He will be immediately eligible to play as a graduate transfer.

Cook played in just six games as a senior before suffering a broken right (shooting) hand against Murray State on Nov. 19. He had surgery and will receive a medical redshirt. Cook was leading the Salukis in scoring (15.0) and assists (3.3) when his season was cut short.

WSU announces signings

of Jackson, Koulibaly

PULLMAN — Adding to his 2020 class, Washington State men’s basketball coach Kyle Smith announced the signings of two more players — Dishon Jackson (Vallejo, Calif.) and Jefferson Koulibaly (Montreal, Quebec).

They’ll join early signees Efe Abogidi (Delta State, Nigeria) and TJ Bamba (Bronx, N.Y.) as freshmen for the 2020-21 season.

One of the highest-rated recruits in program history, Jackson, a 6-10 center from St. Patrick-St. Vincent, led the Bruins to the Division II NorCal state championship game after going 26-11 on the year. Overall he averaged 13.8 points and 9.5 rebounds while adding 2.9 blocks per game.

Koulibaly, a guard, reclassified to the 2020 class to enter the college ranks a season ahead of schedule. As a senior at Lincoln Prep he was named the 2019-20 Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Most Valuable Player after leading the league in scoring at 27.9 points while also averaging 10.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

IHSAA to induct two

into Hall of Fame

Bill Hawkins, longtime boys basketball coach at Madison High, and Tracy Leinen of Boise High will be inducted into the Idaho High School Activities Association Hall of Fame at ceremonies during the 41st annual Hall of Fame banquet Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boise Centre in downtown Boise.

Ticket information will be posted on the IHSAA website in May.

Other awards to be presented at the banquet include the Dick Fleischmann Memorial Award, the Wes Lowe Memorial Award and the Duane D. Wolfe Memorial Award. Distinguished Service Awards for each of the six activity districts, the Spirit of Sport Award and Official of the Year will also be presented. Those recipients will be announced at a later date.

During his 29-year career at Madison, Hawkins’ teams advanced to the state tournament 22 times where they earned trophies 15 times and won the state title five times.

Before being named Boise High athletic director in 1998, Leinen spent 12 years coaching a variety of sports including girls basketball, volleyball and softball. Leinen, an AD for 27 years, was inducted into the IAAA Hall of Fame in 2019.
