IDEA: Leaders, pay up

| April 11, 2020 1:00 AM

Since the executive leadership of our state and cities have determined that the lowest paid of our fellow citizens and our small business people should now be unable to feed their families and pay their bills, would it not be appropriate for those leaders to donate their salaries (for as long as they insist on hurting those folk), to charitable organizations that are now overburdened by those affected by executive decisions?

Since people who have had pride in being self-supporting and have invested their lives in being self-sufficient are now having to go to those charitable organizations, it would seem that the aforementioned leaders who claim to be saving our citizens from themselves, should help alleviate the pain experienced by those who are paying the biggest price as a result of those leaders’ decisions.

One should note that liquor stores, owned by the state of Idaho, are designated as indispensable. Really? It is OK to buy liquor and, perhaps, even go for a DUI ride because one has lost their job and wants to hide, but we can’t eat food at our favorite restaurant or go to a boutique? It is either time to recognize that people can do the distancing thing and still let our least able to survive go back to work.

The death toll in motor vehicle accidents exceeds the death toll of the virus. Presently, the percentage of people dying from the virus is .0067 of the population of the county.

What will be the toll on families who cannot pay their bills? Come on leaders, give up your salaries and comfortable lives to those who really need your help. Sometimes we just have to pay it forward — especially when we are the cause of injury.
