A Coeur d’Alene man who police say threatened to stab his 89-year-old grandfather over heroin is in the Kootenai County jail on an assault charge.

Oliver W. Hurrell faces two felony counts of aggravated battery and two misdemeanor counts of possession of paraphernalia. He is in jail on $15,000 bail.

It wasn’t the first time, police said, that Hurrell threatened his grandfather, or that police paid Hurrell a visit.

The 29-year-old threatened police in the past, and had, according to a report, threatened his grandfather “quite often.”

Last week police responded to a call on the 400 block of Ezy Street after Patrick Hurrell reported his grandson demanded heroin and threatened Patrick with a knife if he did not come through.

Patrick Hurrell told police that Oliver held a knife near his head and ordered him to get heroin “or you’ve had it,” according to the police report.

Oliver had been “right in his face” with the knife, with the blade jutting out from his fist like an ice pick, he told investigators.

Patrick Hurrell said he “feared getting stabbed or cut,” and therefore left the residence Friday after midnight to supposedly find heroin, but called police instead. He told officers that Oliver was in an RV trailer parked in the driveway with his girlfriend and that he didn’t have guns, but owned the knife with a 6-inch blade.

After his arrest, Oliver Hurrell told police his relationship with his grandfather was rocky, but he didn’t know why he was being arrested. He accused his grandfather of threatening to “shoot him in the head,” then recanted and said he heard voices and that his grandfather likely didn’t threaten him.

“He admitted to using heroin and methamphetamine daily and that many of the statements mentioned may just be voices,” police wrote in a report.

A Coeur d’Alene magistrate on Monday issued a no-contact order and ordered Hurrell to undergo drug testing if he is released. Judge Mayli Walsh set Hurrell’s bail amount and scheduled a probable cause hearing within 14 days if Hurrell does not post bail, and 21 days if he is released from jail.
