Students from Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities, Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy and Lake City High School took top honors on Feb. 28 at the University of Idaho’s 2020 Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

The festival, in its 53rd year, features two days of student competitions, workshops and clinics on the University of Idaho campus. More than 3,600 students from 123 elementary, middle and high schools, as well as college and universities, are participating from around the region, including schools from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Canada.

After a day of competition, the Navy Blues, an ensemble from Lake City High School directed by D. Brittany Pfundheller, was named the AAAA Senior Multi-Mic Winner. As a winning vocal ensemble, the Navy Blues performed at the Young Artist’s Winners Concert, competing against nine other schools to be named as the High School Vocal Sweepstakes winner for the festival. Top honors went to Chamber Choir from Sandpoint High School.

Canto de Sorensen, an ensemble from Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities, was named an Elementary Vocal Ensemble winner and competed for the Junior Sweepstakes prize, which ultimately was won by Robert Eagle Staff Middle School from Seattle. In addition, Peytra Parris, a student at Sorensen Magnet School, was named an elementary vocal solo winner.

Coeur d'Alene Charter Jazz Bus, a combo directed by Michael Harrison, was named the AA Instrumental Combo winner.

Josh Skinner, manager of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, said the student performances were a joy to listen to.

"Every year the students raise the standard of performance, while at the same time inspire their peers, teachers and the jazz educators who are lucky enough to work with them throughout the week," he said.
