Idaho men's basketball coach placed on leave

MOSCOW — Idaho men’s basketball coach Don Verlin has been placed on paid administrative leave by the school, following a consultant’s report into the men’s basketball program.

Following the report, Idaho self-reported three potential violations of NCAA bylaws to the NCAA. Verlin was placed on leave May 23, Idaho athletics spokesman Mike Walsh said.

“It was a university decision” to place Verlin on leave, Walsh said.

Verlin has been Idaho’s coach for 11 seasons. The Vandals finished 5-27 in an injury riddled 2018-19 season.

There is no timetable for an update on Verlin’s employment status. The initial administrative leave term was set at 10 days, but it could be shortened or extended for any number of reasons, Walsh said.

While Verlin is on leave, each of the three assistant coaches will share the day-to-day responsibilities of the program. Men’s basketball student-athletes report June 8, for summer school and offseason workouts.
