LEWISTON — It’s not how you start, but how you finish.

The finish — at least to this point — has been a pretty good one for the Coeur d’Alene girls tennis team.

Coeur d’Alene, behind a girls singles title by sophomore Madi Whittemore and runner-up finish by Kim Gunnerson and Maggie Bloom in girls doubles, won the 5A District 1-2 title on Saturday at Lewiston High.

“Watching Madi play today, it was amazing,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. “She just played incredible, did her thing and dominated the match. It was great to see. I was really happy with all of our girls. They’ve worked hard all season. With the way they held their composure with the practices they didn’t have because of weather, it was fabulous for them. I was excited for all of them and how they played.”

The mixed doubles team of Chris Swider and Sarah Swider for Coeur d’Alene also won a district title.

Noah Cobb finished third in boys singles to qualify for state.

“He played his best match of the year and really put a complete game together,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Dan O’Connor said. “He’s a machine and just keeps finding ways to win. He’s been really consistent all year and it came together for him at districts.”

Guillermo Fernandez and Kobie DeLeonard finished fourth to also qualify.

“They had a good tournament and season,” O’Connor said. “We’re hoping for good things for them at state.”

For Lake City, Chloe Teets and Schreyer Jones (girls doubles) and Gabe Gates and Leon Fleck (boys doubles) won district titles.

The top four finishers at regionals qualify for state, beginning Friday at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.

Team scores were unavailable.

RATHDRUM — Lakeland won the boys title and achieved a couple milestones at the 4A District 1-2 tournament which concluded Saturday at Lakeland High.

Lakeland produced its first regional champions in school history in boys doubles, as Cody Wilding and David Durfee knocked off top-seeded Declan Plummer and Christian Story of Sandpoint in the final.

Lakeland is also sending its first girls player to state in Abbie Gagnier, who teamed with Caleb Pearson to finish second in mixed doubles.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this program, or more thankful to be these players’ coach,” second-year Lakeland coach Tyler Jacobs said. “It’s truly an honor to be a part of what they have worked so hard for. Honestly, I was glad I was wearing sunglasses so they couldn’t see me get all misty-eyed when they came off the courts victorious.”
