CAREGIVERS: Some of the best

| May 5, 2019 1:00 AM

It is a unique and special work, to provide care to the elderly. Not just anyone can do it. It takes a special kind of character, and even more, a special heart to do it well.

Most people are not cut out for that kind of work. It’s hard work and can be very uncomfortable to watch a person struggle at life’s end. It’s personal, and physical and requires lots of patience when confronted with sad, more than sad, situations.

So I was comforted in my Mom’s last days, to find caregivers for her, that were as some would say, heaven sent. Wellspring Meadows in Hayden is what I believe to be a unique environment. It keeps residents comfortable in a common area during the day so they’re not stuck in a room alone. They cater to each individual’s needs. It’s small, so it can provide more personal care. And it’s Christian, with a Pastor who calls on residents each week. It’s a family environment. It smells good. And it feels good.

I visited Mom a lot during her seven months there, and I found all the caregivers to be smart, friendly, experienced, and compassionate toward the folks in their care. Caregivers did everything from laundry and cooking, to wiping bottoms, changing briefs, clothes, giving medications and brushing the teeth of those in their care. They did it all with dignity and respect. And they did it with a smile. They got Mom to smile.

Since Mom has passed away, I won’t be going back to visit with them anymore. I will miss them and their warm friendly spirits. I told them, “There’s a special place in heaven for caregivers such as you,” because it take a special heart, patience and the recognition that what you’re doing is really important. They understand that, and I love them for it.
