NIC forward Sellmann

signs with L-C State women

LEWISTON — Lewis-Clark State College women’s basketball coach Brian Orr was looking for the exact fit when shopping the junior college ranks when he found forward Heidi Sellmann at North Idaho College.

“We are really happy to be adding Heidi to next year’s roster,” Orr said. “She is the type of player who automatically makes your program better because she plays hard every possession. She fills several of our needs and we wouldn’t have added a junior college transfer if we didn’t see her playing a major role.

“When you already have five returning sophomores, it is really important that you bring in the right person.”

The 5-foot-11 Sellmann played her first year out of Willmar (Minn.) High at Ridgewater (junior) College in Willmar before heading to North Idaho College. At Ridgewater, she averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds per game, while earning all-conference, all-region and all-state honors as well as being honored once as a Minnesota Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

At NIC, she averaged 15 points per game while shooting 58 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free-throw line. She added 6.5 rebounds per game in helping the Cardinals qualify for the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament

“We needed someone who can score inside and that’s what Heidi does best,” Orr said. “She shoots a great percentage and has a knack of getting to the foul line. She is strong, determined rebounder, which is important since we lost our top two to graduation.”

It’s Christmas in May for

Idaho men’s basketball team

MOSCOW — Idaho has added two more players next year’s men’s basketball roster, bringing in Ja’Vary Christmas and Keyshaad Dixon.

Christmas, a 6-4 guard, played for Sheridan (Wyo.) College last season. He averaged 12.1 points per game as a sophomore, to go along with 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per contest. Sheridan had an exceptional season, finishing at 31-4. The Generals won the Region IX regular season and eventually earned a spot in the NJCAA (national) Tournament.

“He brings size and length and versatility to the wing and has the ability to score in a variety of ways,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said.

As a freshman, Christmas averaged 9.6 points per game at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan. Prior to Cloud County, Christmas walked on at Oregon during the 2016-17 season and took a redshirt during the Ducks’ run to the Final Four.

“We believe his experience in two very tough junior college conferences, along with the experience he gained his freshman year at Oregon, have prepared him to step right in and contribute immediately,” Verlin added.

Christmas, originally from Portland, Ore., played his high school ball at De La Salle North in Portland, where he was the 3A state and conference player of the year. He averaged 25.1 points per game as a senior.

Dixon, a 6-1 point guard, averaged 6.6 points per game during his two-year stint with Ranger (community) College in Ranger, Texas. As a sophomore, he nearly doubled his assist output and posted an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.4. Dixon has continued to improve as a shooter as well. Last season, he shot nearly 43 percent from beyond the arc, including connecting on 45.5 percent of his 3s in conference play.

“Keyshaad is an old-school, no frills point guard who doesn’t dribble the air of the ball, doesn’t care how many shots he gets and isn’t concerned with how many points he scores,” Verlin said. “He only cares about one thing: winning.”

Ranger, coached by former Kentucky, Texas A&M and Texas Tech coach Billy Gillispie, was runner-up at this year’s NJCAA tournament.

Dixon spent one season at St. Andrew’s Prep in Rhode Island. He played his high school ball for Braintree High, just south of Boston.

Idaho also announced the signing of Bruce “BJ” Simmons on Monday. The trio joins Jack Wilson as new additions.

Former Vandal Ungerer drafted by Hamilton of CFL

TORONTO, Ontario — Former Idaho wide receiver David Ungerer was selected in the second round of the Canadian Football League Draft, going to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the 11th overall pick Thursday. Ungerer is the fourth Vandal to be taken in the modern CFL Draft, dating back to 1985, and the third in the last five years.

As a senior in 2018, Ungerer earned two All-Big Sky honors, being named third-team all-league at receiver and honorable mention as a return specialist. Ungerer led the Vandals with 69 catches for 697 yards and four touchdowns. He also scored one rushing touchdown and returned a punt for a score. His 6.3 receptions per game ranked second in the Big Sky.

The Pullman High product played in 45 games for the Vandals. In the final 17 games of his career, Ungerer recorded 1,009 of his 1,252 receiving yards and all 12 of his total touchdowns.

Ungerer will earn his degree from Idaho next week before he and the Tiger-Cats begin training camp ahead of the 2019 season opener June 1, at Ottawa. The 21-week regular season runs through the first week of November.

Running back Rolly Lumbala was the first Vandal to be drafted in the CFL, and remains the highest of Idaho’s four draft picks, going ninth overall to the BC Lions in 2008. Defensive lineman Maxx Forde was picked by BC in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. Offensive lineman Mason Woods was the 10th overall selection by the Toronto Argonauts in 2017.

The CFL Draft is comprised of players from Canadian universities and Canadian players playing in the United States at NCAA or NAIA colleges. Ungerer was born in Maryland, but gained Canadian citizenship because his mom is Canadian.
