LEWISTON — Harrison Reid and Brennen Schuelke each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the West Valley Eagles 8-4 at Church Field on Saturday to conclude play at the North/South tournament.

Earlier Saturday, Lake City fell 9-2 to Rocky Mountain of Meridian.

Conner Conigliaro hit a two-run single in the seventh inning for Lake City against West Valley.

“I thought we played much better today with it being our second time outside,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “We played much better defensively in the third game of the weekend and improving each game. I was happy with our grit and energy. We were able to play a lot of kids and throw a lot of different pitchers.”

Against Rocky Mountain, Bridger Rinaldi singled in the first inning for the Timberwolves, who struck out 10 times against two Grizzly pitchers.

Kaden Hollow went 3 for 3 and drove in four runs for Rocky.

Lake City (1-2) is scheduled to play host to Walla Walla on Wednesday in a doubleheader.

Coeur d’Alene downs

Hillcrest, falls short

to Rocky Mountain

LEWISTON — With a little luck, Coeur d’Alene could have a really good start to its season.

After powering past Hillcrest of Ammon 13-2 at Airport Park, Coeur d’Alene fell to Rocky Mountain of Meridian 8-7 at Church Field on Saturday to conclude the North/South Tournament 2-1.

Against Hillcrest, Cody Davenport struck out eight over five innings and Carter Friesz drove in three runs for Coeur d’Alene, which took advantage of six errors by the Knights.

“We played really well and did everything well against Hillcrest,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Cody had a stellar outing and was really mowing through the lineup. We came out ready to go and had some great at-bats in the first game.”

In its late game, Rocky Mountain led 8-3 after five innings before Coeur d’Alene rallied to cut the deficit to one run in the seventh.

“We battled back and had a chance to win it, but just didn’t come through,” Mahin said. “We had runners in scoring position in the fifth and the bases loaded in the seventh, but couldn’t push those runs across. You never like to lose, but that’s a good game to go through. If we clean up some mistakes, we end up taking care of business.”

Quinton Bunch had three RBIs against Rocky Mountain for Coeur d’Alene (4-1), which travels to Ferris on Monday.

Post Falls leadoff batter Spencer Zeller reached base 11 times on Saturday — on two hits, seven walks and two hit by pitches — and scored five runs on the day.

Timberlake was held to four hits by Stetson Beus of Parma in the first game.

Against Sugar, Jack McDonald wend 3 for 5, scored two runs and drove in one for Timberlake. Ray Knerr went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for the Tigers, and Kobe Harris, Alex Drake and Jacob James each had two hits.
