Mackimmie shines in Coeur d'Alene win
- BASEBALL
LEWISTON — Zach Mackimmie struck out eight over six two-hit innings for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in an 8-1 win over the West Valley Eagles of Spokane on the first day of the North/South Tournament on Friday at Church Field.
“Zach did a great job,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “He only walked one batter, but he pitched effectively. He hit two guys, but we pitch inside sometimes and that’s going to happen.”
Quinton Bunch had two RBIs, Alan Chatfield two hits and a run scored and Jake Brown two hits and a run scored for Coeur d’Alene (3-0), which faces Hillcrest today at 9 a.m. at Airport Park in Lewiston, then plays Rocky Mountain at Church Field at 11:30 to conclude the tournament.
“We had a great game defensively and pitching,” Mahin said. “Offensively, Alan had the most quality at-bats on the team and just had a great approach. Jake had a great day in the leadoff spot. I was really happy with how we played.”

LEWISTON — For its opener, Lake City did some good things on the field in coach Paul Manzardo’s eyes.
Bennett Cunningham had a leadoff single in the first inning for the Timberwolves, the lone hit for Lake City, in a 10-0 loss to the Knights of Ammon in the North/South Classic at Church Field in Lewiston.
“We did a good job of putting the ball in play,” Manzardo said. “It was just one of those things where we couldn’t find the hole. We were a little out front, and that has something to do with not taking outside batting practice and not being outside. We’ll get better from here.”
Lake City’s first game of the day with Clarkston was rained out and will not be made up.
“It was the first time we’ve been on the field since last summer,” Manzardo said. “We’ll be OK, but need to keep working at it and plugging away.”
Lake City concludes the tournament today against Rocky Mountain of Meridian and West Valley at Church Field in Lewiston.

Lakeland suffers
two tough losses
NAMPA — The Hawks gave up five runs in the top of the sixth and final inning of a 3-3 game and lost 8-3 to Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls in their first game on Friday at the Buck’s Bags Spring Invite.
In the second game, Skyline of Idaho Falls broke a tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to edge Lakeland 5-4.
Both games were played at Rodeo Park.
Collin Bell of Lakeland hit a two-run double in the fifth inning against Canyon Ridge to tie the game at 3-3.
Against Skyline, Vanner Hegbloom went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Hawks, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
“Both games today came down to good pitching, but we just had too many errors in each to overcome,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “When you’re playing good teams, you have to play soundly in all phases. We just didn’t put it all together at the right times. I’m confident that our team will get better with each outing. The more we’re outside playing, the more consistent we’ll be.”
Today, Lakeland (0-2-1) wraps up tourney play vs. Wood River at Boise High.

PAYETTE — Jack McDonald struck out nine over seven innings before reaching his pitch limit, but the Tigers held off the Pirates in a nonleague game at Payette High.
“Jack pitched a great game, and we were solid behind him defensively,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “We hit the ball well and made plays when we needed to.”
Payette, which scored two runs in the sixth, had the tying run on third base, but Jacob Hessing got a flyout to McDonald in center to end the game. McDonald, Kobe Harris and Zac Larsen had RBIs singles in the fifth for Timberlake.
Earlier, Gage Benefield had two hits and three RBIs for the Tigers in a 16-7 loss to the Weiser Wolverines.
