ASOTIN, Wash. — Natalie Sell pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings opened their season with a 12-0 victory over the Asotin Panthers on Thursday.

Sell walked one and hit one.

“She looked great,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “She was throwing the ball hard, and she felt like she had more to go to.”

Freshman Alexia McCurdy had three hits, including two doubles, for the Vikings, who were without three starters due to the upcoming spring break. Another freshman, Alexis Blankenship, also had three hits.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said Darretta, who pitched Lake City to a state championship in 2001. “I’m excited for what we’re going to do this season.”

Coeur d’Alene is scheduled to return to action April 2 at home vs. Lakeland.

“It was the first time we’ve been on the dirt and we had a few innings where we gave up a few too many runs,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “I was really proud of the girls for making some good contact on the ball. We hit the ball very hard, even on the balls that were outs. And I was happy to see that.”

Bernie Carhart singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of the first game. Emma Howard, Jaycee Jerome and Kyndal Lindley also homered on the day for Timberlake, which travels to Lakeland on April 11.

ASOTIN, Wash. — Noah Mayfield doubled twice, including a two-run double in the fifth inning for the Vikings in a nonleague win over the Panthers in their season opener.

“Noah had a really good day for us in the leadoff spot,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Considering it was our first time outside, we played solid defense. We ran the bases really well and pitched the ball really well. Asotin’s a good club and can hit the fastball.”

Carter Friesz and Colt Rowley each had two hits, including a double, for Coeur d’Alene.

“Carter had a big hit to get us going offensively and threw out a couple of runners,” Mahin said. “He was big for us today.”
