LEVY: Facts about Lakeland
This letter is in response to Stephanie Gossard’s letter “Schools: No More Taxes” from the March 3 edition. I would like to take a moment to refute Ms. Gossard’s claims about Lakeland School District with some facts.
First, the money used to send the flyers came from a 501c3 group called the Lakeland Education Foundation that is the umbrella for the “Citizens for Quality Education” group. No district funds were used for this mailing.
Second, the replacement levy does not increase the tax rate for homeowners as clearly stated on the Replacement Levy Fact Sheet found on the Lakeland School District homepage (lakeland272.org). By reviewing not only this fact sheet, but also the Replacement Levy Presentation and district accountability report found in the presentation (both also at lakeland272.org), anyone can see exactly where levy dollars are spent.
Third, schools in Idaho are only ranked 48th based on FUNDING from the state, not on quality of schools. In fact, according to USNews.com, Idaho K-12 schools are ranked 25th in the nation. Considering Idaho schools are some of the lowest funded in the nation, you are receiving a good bang for your buck in Idaho. Lakeland patrons especially receive a great deal since Lakeland has higher SAT scores, graduation rates, and go-on rates than the state average.
I would encourage Ms. Gossard and all patrons of the Lakeland School District to view the levy fact sheet and presentation available at Lakeland272.org. After doing so, I know voters will see the value they receive in this highly-regarded and top-ranked school district.
