LAKELAND: Your time or money

| March 6, 2019 12:00 AM

I’d like to encourage voters in the area to take to the polls on March 12! I’m a mom of three kids who attend Spirit Lake Elementary in the Lakeland School District. My kids benefit from the full-time music and technology teachers provided by the levy, as well as the advanced learning programs. I’ve also seen the benefits of full-day kindergarten in a community where there aren’t many preschools.

We’ve all felt the pinch of the increase in property taxes between the recent assessment and the bond increase amount two years ago. Thankfully, Lakeland School District is very up front about where our money is being spent and continually looking for ways to educate our kids with minimal resources. This year’s levy requests the same amount as the last, which actually plays out to be LESS per household because of our increased population.

Please vote yes to fund our schools. For more information, Lakeland School District has an excellent presentation on their website: https://www.sd272.org/

Educate yourself and make a decision you are confident with.

If you don’t want to pass the levy, I’d encourage you to speak with the school district and share your ideas on what to cut or how they can go about getting funding otherwise. Or commit to sharing your skills with the district for free. Our kids require input to become responsible capable adults — either your funds or your time.
