SCHOOLS: Vote 'yes' for levy

| March 1, 2019 12:00 AM

As a working parent with kids in the Coeur d’Alene School District, I regularly attend: Coeur d’Alene School board meetings; Coeur d’Alene School workshops on mental health, district budget, data, etc., I can justly say I have a vantage point into the workings of the district few, who are not employees, can claim. Not only have I gained perspective, but I have also earned a voice to be openly heard and even influence consideration of future actions. You can earn this, too.

From my merited viewpoint, I want to challenge arguments of those against the proposed levy:

- The quality of education in our community extends beyond those with school-aged kids. Those who are retired and have chosen to live here have all done so for reasons closely linked to quality education: lower unemployment and mental health issues, a stronger economy and lower crime rates.

- We face a dire need to attract and retain quality educators in the face of very appealing wages across the boarder. Yes, there are QUALITY teachers in our district who are DEDICATED to student success, and we desperately need to keep this talent.

- Some claim the two-year levy keeps the district accountable to the public. Considering the levy comprises 25 percent of the operational budget, a “no” vote does not improve the district’s performance. It only hurts the students. Keep the district accountable by being engaged.

I urge you to vote “yes” for our students and our community. Then engage with the district on the route forward.
