HB203: Sanity would shoot it down
A show of hands from those of you who have heard about the introduction of HB203. For those of you scratching your head, let me fill you in.
HB203 in a nutshell allows for ANYONE with an enhanced conceal carry permit to bring a concealed weapon onto a K-12 campus. An enhanced concealed carry permit requires an eight-hour training session. If this is the answer to making schools safer, I have some questions.
Did you know that highly trained police officers hit their intended target a mere 34 percent of the time? Yet somehow, eight hours of training is sufficient.
The mastermind behind this bill, Chad Christensen, has all sorts of other ideas, such as principals not being allowed to know who in the school has guns, no on-going teacher training although Christensen encourages it, and school boards unable to override this law yet private schools can opt out.
If this bill sounds crazy, it’s because it is. We all want our kids to be safe at school. I don’t think anyone can argue that. But putting guns in schools will have disastrous consequences. There are laws that we can pass to make schools safer that do NOT infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment right. If we allow guns in schools under Christensen’s bill, we have lost our minds and failed our children.
