Inflammatory bowel disorders: The nebulous category of digestive distress
Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, and others are a collection of digestive disorders that have been lumped into the bin of inflammatory bowel disorders (IBD). For years they have been known as notoriously stubborn conditions for which no permanent solutions exist. Although the medical industry claims there is no cure for the collection of irritable bowel conditions, there are, in fact, many solutions that have provided long-term relief to a great many people. In treating these conditions, our primary goals are to restore the function of the digestive system, reduce inflammation and give you the resources to create lasting healing.

Much of the “intel” we get on the wine grape crop in any given year is opportunistic. We learn much from winemakers and others who visit the shop to taste the latest releases as they come in. While we wrote recently about the 2019 vintage, which is in the middle of the growing year right now, we have updates from folks who have either recently visited wine country, or from winemakers.

WORKFORCE: Employers, what do you need?
In response to Rod Gramer’s My Turn article on July 27, I agree that there is a valid concern about the low percentage of people in the Idaho workforce with adequate education or training. What Mr. Gramer failed to mention, is what type of education/training the employers of Idaho need from their prospective employees. This information would translate into a better understanding of what education our high school graduates should pursue.

There are new ground “meats” on the market which are becoming available, even at popular fast-food restaurants. Coeur d'Alene clings to constitutional rights during town hall
A swarm of citizens packed the Coeur d’Alene Public Library’s community room Tuesday night to ask questions and, in some cases, demand answers during a grassroots organization-sponsored town hall on Idaho’s initiative process. Reclaim Idaho, as part of its Idaho Speaks statewide tour, held a symposium on a recent failed legislative attempt to make the people’s initiative process harder to push through. The hourlong event featured three Coeur d’Alene lawmakers, a retired state Supreme Court Chief Justice and a lively crowd of 163 — some determined, some curious.
Aspirin not recommended for cardiovascular disease
For decades, one low-dose aspirin a day was considered an easy way to prevent a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular event. But according to the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA), that course of prevention is no longer recommended for healthy older adults. The blood-thinning effect is too high and the evidence of benefit is not enough to make daily aspirin worth taking for most adults. The new advice is this: skip the aspirin unless your doctor specifically recommends it for you.
DIVERSTIY: Important messages hit home

Anglin with Anglen - 1973
Editor’s note: For 27 years, beginning Feb. 8, 1973, Ralph Anglen of Bonners Ferry wrote an outdoor column for the local paper that was widely read and used as a source of fishing and hunting information. It was called “Anglin’ with Anglen,” and was the real deal, the genuine item, written by someone whose socks were wet, whose toes were cold and who pulled no punches. We will continue as space allows to reprint Anglen’s column solely for its pleasure and historical significance. Any typos, we leave as is. Readers are reminded that this column was written almost 50 years ago and conditions, including state fish and game regulations, have changed.

PARKING FEES: 'Insiders' on notice
Your recent editorial, “Parking Fee Feud Masks Deeper Issues” (Sunday, July 18), reminds me of the divide that continues in this town. The side you chose is the insiders, those who defend and apologize for the city’s decisions. The message sent is clear: You on the other side, you activists, single mothers, elderly and disabled (“wobbly oldsters”), you’re not one of us. You should stay home, be quiet, and obey. Let the insiders decide what’s best for you.

WHITEHEAD: Old 'news' is pathetic
Seriously? A 14-year-old notice of a personal bankruptcy filing rates a front page, top of the banner, bold headline? Re:“Sheriff candidate filed for bankruptcy in 2005,” I thought the Press was supposed to be a “news” paper.
The story behind the decisions
There has been much speculation in the Press and among North Idaho residents about the likelihood, or even the chance, of a Trader Joe’s opening in our area. Having some crossover with the company — given that we sell wine and so do they — we have the chance to have a bit of somewhat grounded speculation about why they have not yet come into this market. While we can’t speak for the company, nor can we know for certain why they have yet to show up, we have a sense of a few things that might be involved.
Sacroiliac joint pain
The sacroiliac (SI) joint is where the upper body meets the lower body by connecting the sacrum with the iliac crest of the pelvis. It transmits all the forces of the upper body to the pelvis and legs and is the center of motion and shock absorption. Something unique about SI joint pain is that it commonly affects young and middle-aged women more than any other group. The onset of back and leg pain usually starts during someone’s 30s or 40s and can become chronic if the underlying causes are not corrected.

After completing my transaction and getting my receipt I walked back to my car to find a $20 ticket on my windshield and the woman gone. There was exactly one minute between her ticketing me and the receipt I received.

Today the rate of infertility is rising. Infertility and subfertility can affect women, men or even both. Since I have been in practice for four decades now, I have watched the trends. Initially, in the 1980s, it was pretty much women who had the fertility issues. Then in the ’90s, male infertility was also on the upswing. Since the turn of the century, it is not uncommon for it to be both.
WHITEHEAD: Must be the best candidate
It’s not often that my husband asks if I read the article on the front page in Sunday’s paper. Neither of us was really thinking about who to vote for Kootenai Country Sheriff but that article sealed the deal. Richard Whitehead must be the best man for the job. Why, you ask? Because small-minded people are making a major event out of the fact that he filed for bankruptcy while living in Texas in 2005.

The Wednesday article about the unsuccessful attempt by an organization to subject urban renewal agencies to undue political interference prompts me to illustrate how it operates and how a small town’s fortunes can be turned around by the judicious use of these funds which, by the way, are not stolen from other entities, but are based on the tax receipts in excess of the projected receipts for that fiscal year. No excess, no incremental receipts to the agency. Thus, this provides a relief valve for other arms of the local government that depend on these revenues if they fall short of projections.

Anglin' with Anglen - 1973

Google-ites gone astray in anti-military move
“Don’t be evil” was a motto used in Google’s corporate code of conduct when it was founded in 1998. Many soon-to-be employees were drawn to the company because of its ethos as espoused in this admirable idea. (Its motto is now “Do the right thing.”)
ABORTION: Where did that come from?
In the July 12 issue of The Press, John Tappero criticizes my July 7 letter commending MoveOn for their demonstration against our abuse of immigrant children at the southern border. Also, in comparing activism like that to the Kootenai County Dems’ passing a mere resolution, there was some intended irony. It appears Mr. Tappero didn’t get that.

The bath water
As the saying goes, “don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater.” Right now, you’re probably wondering what the wine angle is on that title and opening line. Well, there is one — as you might suspect. What to do when a wine we have loved, or a winery that is one of our favorites, all of a sudden doesn’t taste the same? Your first thought is either, ‘have I changed,’ or ‘has the winery changed?’ The short answer is that it could be either or both. But still the question of what to do?

Why I chose to practice natural medicine
My goal as a health care practitioner is simply to help more people to have more fun by helping them feel well enough to have fun. I put a diverse background to use to make this happen. Before I decided to pursue a masters degree in Oriental Medicine, I stumbled across a few monumental ideas that would be like tractor beams drawing me into practicing medicine. I started out studying chemical and biological engineering, wanting to work on developing alternative energies. However, this was a time in my life where I was struggling through a profound fear of social situations. I instinctively knew that I could find many answers to my concerns in the remarkable wisdom of nature. I was able to resolve my anxiety through the power of whole food nutrition. I am still in awe at the ways we can leverage our innate physiological processes and the power of food as medicine.

I shook hands with at least 10 of these young men and I can’t tell you how impressed I was and how appreciative. This gesture impacted me and all the people around me as they continued the 18 blocks down the street.

A good example of politicians perceived good, can be unknowingly manipulated and overridden by uninformed/misinformed bias of public opinion and industry conflict by powerful representative politicians (Sen. Isakson — relief worker Kenya, real estate businessman; Sen. Coons — Lawyer, legal clerk, counsel for manufacturing firm) and an AP Journalist (Krishner — auto writer, slow bicyclist) backing an issue circumventing government experts who have many reasons to list as “undetermined” in a complex rule-making study that has major effects on the public, motor industry and trucking eating up valuable resources and adding questionable rules.

28 Idaho lawmakers oppose Boise State diversity programs
IDAHO FALLS (AP) — A group of 28 Idaho Republican lawmakers have sent a letter to Boise State University criticizing the school’s efforts to address gender-based violence, aid underrepresented minority students and to avoid bias in hiring decisions because the lawmakers say those and other programs increase tuition costs and go against the “Idaho way.”

There is a big difference between an author TELLING emotions on a page and an author FEELING emotions on a page.

Pamela O. Rule in our house: No reading; no screen time. I’ve let up on time limits some over the summer since we’re pretty strict during the school year about it. However, they still need a time limit or they would literally spend all day staring at a screen. Getting tough to limit screen time though because so many devices from phones, chrome books, iPad, Kindle, Xbox to TVs. They device hop. I’m ready to lock them all up for the summer!! We use circle to limit screen time & keep them safe online.

Help solve the great tackle box caper
An 8-year-old fisherman is devastated after someone stole his treasured tackle box when he was fishing around noon on Thursday under the Cedar Street Bridge in Sandpoint. His dad, Junior, is asking that whoever took the black and neon green tackle box return it to any business at the Cedar Street Bridge. “It’s an awful thing to take something so innocent and constructive away from him,” his father said. “I know it’s not fancy, but it means a lot to him.” See the full story in your Coeur d’Alene Press this weekend.

Public hearing needed for big Hayden Lake decisions
Many of the lake front property owners on Hayden Lake believe we have a right to protect our shoreline property and docks from damage and erosion, help the kayak and paddleboard users needing a safe zone on the lake, and swimmers that are left totally unprotected. It has been clearly reported many times that the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t have the equipment or manpower to be enforcing to any minimal degree the abuses and violations occurring on the lake. Mr. Steve Meyer’s comment about simply wanting to educate people as to what 200 feet looks like is simply naive and is why we all have our legal buoys 200 feet from the shore and dock in the first place. Enforcing the use of legal buoys that are truly set at 200 feet makes sense, but to mandate the complete removal of all the buoys and replacing them with only 14 buoys is insane!

The cause couldn’t have been more compelling: the brutal, immoral, illegal treatment of immigrant children at our southern border, a direct result of Trumpian policy, if you’ll remember, intended as a deterrent to hallucinatory rapists, drug dealers, gang members and other unsavory, non-English speaking types pouring from Mexico into the U.S. in droves. Whose hallucinations? One guess.

CLIMATE: Scientists who know the truth
Twelve years and the world we know will be destroyed unless we stop the use of fossil fuels and depend totally on wind and solar. No one seems to consider that it is fossil fuels that have helped make this nation great.
SENTENCE: No victim? Then no crime
It is absurd that a peaceful individual can be thrown in a cage because he had the gall to consume a plant (marijuana) to ease his physical pain. A plant which simply happens to be arbitrarily deemed illegal by government. Idaho can, and should be better. As a state we beat the drum of conservatism and individual liberty ... until it comes to alcohol, tobacco, and soft drugs, and whatever other liberties our “Lord and Savior government” doesn’t like.
CLIMATE: Elevate the debate - now
I have been an Idaho resident for over 20 years and have witnessed devastating forest fires, recent flash floods and unpredictable weather here in Coeur d’Alene. I have been a witness to the climate change and science deniers. Human rights cannot and should not be denied. We need the support of our local officials to open the dialogue about climate change in Idaho. It’s an urgent matter and cannot be ignored.

CLIMATE: Current warming is normal
The summer of 2018 produced record high temperatures, a record that may be broken many times if the current period of global warming continues. That record, however, is misleading. It began about 150 years ago during the Little Ice Age (LIA). It contains no records of high temperatures from prior warming periods.

Great 'sitting in the shade' weather
Like it or not, summer is in full swing. Time to adjust those sprinklers to run either early or late. Every other day for 8 to 10 minutes works for most lawns. NEVER run your sprinklers in the middle of the day as most of it will just evaporate. Even worse is running them when it’s windy. Lots of cities enforce sprinklers running at the wrong time of day with a hefty fine.

Schools: We need to share the costs
We all agree that growth creates a problem for our schools. WRITERS: Notification of vilification
First, I would like to say that the Cd’A Press’s editorial section is top rate. The editor allows most points of view to be printed. I am going to spotlight a few of its contributors, as follows:
Treeport: Writer crashed in land of fake news
I just read Bob Costigan’s “My Turn” column, “Treeport: What it is (and isn’t)” and feel compelled to respond. I’ve lived at Treeport for over 15 years and can tell you that Mr. Costigan really has his facts very wrong.
Deep-six 627? It's the best solution

UI: Delivering on our brave and bold mission
I am thrilled to be back in Moscow to take the helm at the University of Idaho. To be in this role, after my childhood years roaming campus with my grandfather, Leon “Doc” Green, makes for a special homecoming. The U of I presidency is an incredible honor.
OPINIONS: Don't discount the young
I take exception to the LTE from Bob Hunt that appeared in the Press on 6/28/19 concerning Zoe O’Brien and her activist roles. He says he’s “for her having the rights of any citizen when she is paying her way. When she is a productive, taxpaying, working person with a dog in the fight and when she has studied and considered her positions after taking input from many different sources, then her opinions would be worthy of attention.”

Spidey takes a needed MCU break in 'Far From Home'
Don’t expect “Spider-Man: Far From Home” to dive deep into the lingering questions of the Marveling Cinematic Universe following “Avengers: Endgame.” In fact, the movie gets better whenever it steers away from the overall saga and focuses on Peter Parker’s life as awkward high-schooler/moonlighting superhero.
REBUTTAL: California interest rates wrong
R.H. Duffield’s “My Turn” (June 29) is in great error by stating, without proof, that “In California, virtually all California mortgages are ‘interest-only loans.’”
Movie Times
Hayden Discount Cinema
FIREWORKS: Time to ban them all
July Fourth is fun for many humans, but it’s devastating for wildlife. Mid-season rosé update
The Fourth of July holiday is here and it’s the prime-time for drinking dry rosé. These lovely, bone-dry wines are most often released during the spring and summer months and come from many wine producing regions and are made from several different varietals. Regardless of where it comes from or what grape is used, the best wines are crisp and clean, have low alcohol levels and are perfectly refreshing in the warm weather. Production levels most times are small, so some rosé will come and go in a matter of weeks, thus the need for our update. Here are our favorites right now.
