NIC sweeps Columbia Basin

COEUR d’ALENE — The North Idaho College men’s basketball team continued to roll through its Northwest Conference schedule with a dominating victory on Monday, while the Cardinal women had a much-needed bounceback win over Columbia Basin on Monday.

In men’s action, NIC led 69-22 at halftime and coasted to a 124-50 win in Christianson Gymnasium. Emmitt Taylor sank 8-of-13 from outside the arc for all 24 of his points. Five other Cardinals scored in double figures, with Nate Pryor scoring 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the floor.

Taylor nailed three straight 3-pointers five minutes into the game to put the hosts ahead 23-4, and the Hawks (4-14 overall, 1-5 NWC) never threatened again.

As a team, NIC (17-2, 6-0) shot 66.7 percent from the floor, 62 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the free-throw line.

Victor Clarke led Columbia Basin with 20 points, and the Hawks managed only 25 percent shooting (16-for-64) from the floor.

NIC 83, Columbia Basin 66: In women’s action, Columbia Basin opened a 10-point lead with eight minutes left in the second quarter, as Megan Haugen’s jump shot put the Hawks ahead 24-14.

The Cardinals closed out the quarter on a 15-2 run, with a basket and two free throws by Alex Carlton putting the hosts ahead 38-33 at intermission. Carlton’s 17 points led four NIC players in double-figures.

The Hawks’ Alexis Castro had a huge game, scoring 38 points, and her 3-pointer cut the lead to 38-36 to open the third quarter. Halle Eborall responded with a jump shot, and the Cardinals (14-4, 4-2) reeled off eight straight points to take control of the game. The Cardinals outscored the Hawks 23-11 in the final period to put the game away.

Heidi Sellman and Alivia Williams scored 16 points for NIC, which shot 32-for-57 from the floor (56.1 percent). Abigayle Myers added 11 points for Columbia Basin (10-8, 1-5).

Both NIC basketball teams travel across the border to face Community Colleges of Spokane on Wednesday.
