Wilfong helps Timberlake take over first in IML

| January 20, 2019 12:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Senior JT Wilfong scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Timberlake Tigers beat Bonners Ferry 58-43 on Saturday night to take over first place in the Intermountain League from the Badgers.

“It’s big; it’s tough to win in Bonners, so it’s a good win for us,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said.

Wilfong was 8 of 10 from the field for the Tigers (4-9, 2-0 IML), including 7 of 7 from 2-point range.

“JT did a good job playing defense and running the offense. He was very economical for us tonight,” Menti said.

Chris Durette led Bonners Ferry (7-8, 2-1) with 10 points.

Timberlake travels to St. Maries on Thursday.

PRIEST RIVER — Sparked by senior guard Brennen Atkins’s return, the Wildcats used a 17-0 run in the second quarter to beat the Spartans in Intermountain League play.

“Atkins made four of five of his 3s and everyone fed off of that,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “It was a good win that we really needed.”

For a while, things weren’t easy for the Wildcats (3-11, 2-1 IML). The Spartans (0-9, 0-2) struck first by breaking the Wildcats’ press and getting everyone on offense involved. Four of Priest River’s starting five either scored or assisted in its 15 first-quarter points.

But Kellogg picked up the pace on both ends of the floor and stymied Priest River’s offense; despite scoring 15 points in the first quarter, the Spartans managed only 19 points for the rest of the game.

Priest River senior guard Keegan Hegel led all scorers with 17 points. Atkins led Kellogg with 16 points, and teammate Gavin Luna added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Kellogg plays host to Wallace on Wednesday, and Priest River will play Upper Columbia Academy on Tuesday.

Our defense was really good tonight and I was proud of the kids. Coy did a really good job on their best player (Payton Daly) and held him scoreless and take a bunch of really tough shots.”

Mullan chose to play the Genesis Prep JV, opting to take a forfeit against the Jaguars varsity in the scheduled league game.
