Lakeland gets rolling, paddles Sandpoint

| January 19, 2019 12:00 AM

RATHDRUM — Once Lakeland got rolling on the wrestling mat, it was tough to stop.

Chandler Axtell (120 pounds) and Devin Suko (138) earned decisions by one-point for the Hawks, who won nine matches by pin to beat the Bulldogs in the Battle for the Paddle spirit dual at Lakeland High on Friday.

Peyton Wysong (98 pounds), Sam Edelblute (126), Riley Siegford (132), Cage Hendry (152), Colton Boettcher (160), Curtis Johnson (170), Hunter Oles (182), Hayden Berger (220) and Sam Feusier (285) won by pin for Lakeland.

“The kids wrestled really well tonight,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “Both Chandler and Devin had wins that really fired the guys up. They really stepped up and pulled it off and got the ball rolling and never gave up. It was all of the kids wrestling to their ability. It’s great to see as a coach our guys peaking at the right time.”

Lakeland won the Paddle for the second time in the three-year history of the competition.

“The crowd, it was definitely motivation and pumping up the kids,” Edelblute said. “It’s a great experience for those kids. It was an awesome night.”

Lakeland competes in the North Idaho Rumble next Friday and Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.
