MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Utah State signee Alphonso Anderson had 28 points and 12 rebounds for North Idaho College, which opened Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 101-65 win over the Big Bend Vikings on Wednesday night.

“Alphonso is so strong around the basket,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “He was really aggressive getting to the rim, and it was a huge factor for us tonight.”

Lake City High product James Carlson had 12 of his 17 points in the first half for NIC, which finished the night 45-of-85 shooting.

“James had a great night for us tonight,” Symons said. “We got him into the pick and roll and he was knocking down some shots. Nate (Pryor, who finished with four assists) did a great job of getting him the ball.”

NIC (12-2) hosts Treasure Valley on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Rolly Williams Court.

Kolby Huerta scored 20 points for Big Bend (10-2), which entered the game averaging 93.5 points per game.

“They’re a good team,” Symons said of Big Bend. “We just wanted to set a precedence with our defense. To hold them to 65 was a huge deal.”

MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Heidi Sellman scored a game-high 18 points for the Cardinals, who finished 25-for-62 from the field in a loss to the Vikings in the Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schoools.

Halle Eborall had 12 points and Keara Simpson 11 points and eight rebounds for NIC (10-3), which trailed 52-46 after three quarters.

“They packed it in on Keara pretty good and we just weren’t hitting the outside shots,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “We just weren’t finishing as well as we had been. I think the whole team felt we didn’t play as well as we did (at the Lower Columbia College Classic in which the Cardinals went 3-0), and I think we’re going to come out and learn from this.”

Miranda Johnson had 17 points and six rebounds for Big Bend (12-2).

NIC hosts Treasure Valley at Rolly Williams Court on Saturday at 2 p.m.
