COEUR d’ALENE — With big games coming up in the next week, Lake City’s pitching staff kept it pretty simple for coach Paul Manzardo in Friday’s 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader against visiting Post Falls.

“Our pitchers really kept Post Falls off balance and threw a lot of ground-ball outs,” said Manzardo, whose team swept the Trojans 8-0 and 4-0. “We got some clutch hits when we needed to and played two really, really good games. We were solid defensively. Whenever you can shut out an IEL in two games, that’s a pretty good day.”

Jacob Rutherford struck out 13 in five innings for Post Falls in the opener before reaching his pitch count limit.

Brock Sween and Alex Feek teamed to strike out six in the first-game shutout.

In the nightcap, Jackson Scherr drove in two runs and Bridger Rinaldi hit a solo home run in the third for Lake City. Cooper Grohs and Ryan Rios combined on a two-hit shutout for the T-Wolves.

“It was a good day,” Manzardo said. “It was senior day, and all of our seniors had good days. It was a total team effort.”

Lake City (7-9, 4-6 5A IEL) travels to Lewiston for a doubleheader at Church Field on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.

OSBURN — No school buses will be needed for Timberlake for the 3A District 1 tournament.

The Tigers will be staying home, but for all the right reasons.

They did everything to beat us in the first game, and we didn’t come out ready to play.”

In the nightcap, Timberlake posted an 11-run first inning en route to a sweep. Alex Drake struck out nine for Timberlake (11-6-1, 10-0 IML), which hosts Sandpoint for a nonleague doubleheader on Monday.

Lake City’s Currie fifth at Spokane tournament

SPOKANE — Kyla Currie of Lake City was the top local finisher, taking fifth with a 78 in the Eileen Northcutt Tournament at Wandermere Golf Course.

Lake City finished fifth as a team with a 273, with Coeur d’Alene seventh at 278.

“Kyla had a great day,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “Finishing fifth in a field that big and talented says a lot about her game. The other girls struggled a bit today, but they have showed resiliency all season long, so I know they will bounce back next week.”

Martina Hicks led Coeur d’Alene with an 84.

“(Assistant coach) Chase Bennett told me Martina hit the ball like nobody’s business today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “She’s every bit as good of a golfer as anyone in the region. And the other girls are improving as well.”
