Friesz has an all-around senior day for Vikings

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior day is special enough on its own, but given a chance to do things a little differently, Carter Friesz did in his final regular season game at home for Coeur d’Alene.

Friesz — who played every position but pitcher — singled to score Noah Mayfield with an insurance run in the fifth inning for the Vikings in a 3-2 nonleague win over the Lakeland Hawks at Ted Page Field.

“He started at catcher and then we moved him around to each spot in the outfield in another inning,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “He was going to pitch, but since it was a close game, we left him at first base and he ended up making the final out. He had a good senior day game.”

Jeret Taylor scored on a bases-loaded walk to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning, and Alex Karns pitched a scoreless seventh to get the save for Coeur d’Alene. David Kraak allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings for Coeur d’Alene.

“David has been getting some appearances in relief, and he was just lights out today,” Mahin said. “He did an awesome job and competed the entire time. We had some good at-bats, but just couldn’t find the holes. It was nice to get a hard fought, close win like that.”

Coeur d’Alene (16-1) travels to Lewiston for a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.

Lakeland (6-9-2) visits Moscow for a 4A IEL doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.

Kellogg 1-2

KELLOGG — Ashlyn Mallet hit three homers and drove in 11 runs in the first game, and the visiting Tigers swept the Wildcats in Intermountain League play at Kellogg Middle School.

Mallet finished the day 8 for 9 with four homers, four doubles and 15 RBIs for Timberlake (12-1, 10-0 IML), which clinched a tie for the league title.

“She just hit well all day; she’s just seeing the ball real well,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “She’s just crushing the ball.”

Freshman Lily Carhart hit her first home run ever — a grand slam — in the second game. Carhart went 4 for 5 with seven RBIs and three runs scored in the nightcap, and Kyndal Lindley was 5 for 6 with seven RBIs and four runs scored.

Becca Malloy went 5 for 5 with six RBIs and four runs scored for the Tigers in the first game.

“They adjusted really well to the pitching,” Lupinacci said. “We didn’t hit as well the first time we played them, but we made some adjustments.”
