PLASTIC: Where do bags go?

Why do stores lie to the public about recycling plastic bags? Some stores have plastic bag recycle bins, but I’m aware that in some cases, employees are told to throw the bags away. I’ve seen it. People drop them off with the impression they are helping the environment, but in fact it’s making it worse.

I donate my bags to secondhand stores. Someone needs to investigate all these drop off stations and make them stop lying to the public?
