Coeur d'Alene boys claim Kraus invite

| April 20, 2019 1:00 AM

- GOLF

It was good enough on Friday.

How it will rank down the road, that’s to be determined.

The Coeur d’Alene boys claimed the team title with a 309 at the Kraus Invitational on Friday at Avondale Golf Club.

Four of five golfers for Coeur d’Alene were under 80.

“It was nice to see a big tournament for the kids,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “Even though we won, it was kind of frustrating. To compete at state, we’ve got to continue to get better. We’ve got a few guys stuck in a rut right now and making mental errors. We need to get around the course a little better.”

At Hayden Lake Country Club, Mead won the girls team title, with Lake City finishing second.

“The girls are starting to play great golf,” Lake City girls coach Corey Owen said. “In my third year as coach, I think this is the first time we have had all five varsity girls under 100. They have been working really hard and this year, and it is showing on their scorecards.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Jack McDonald struck out nine, Kobe Harris went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, leading the Tigers past the Spartans in the first game of an Intermountain League doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Timberlake scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to get a sweep.

“Jack pitched really well again and we played solid defense behind him,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “In the second game, we didn’t play solid defense. They took advantage of our mistakes and we made a lot of errors with nobody out. We were able to get some guys on and find a way, but I want our guys to remember that anyone can beat anyone on any given day. We’ll move forward and get better.”

Timberlake (7-6-1, 6-0 IML) travels to Bonners Ferry for a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
