LEWISTON — Jacob Rutherford struck out 11 and allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings, and his brother Cole Rutherford earned the save with 1 1/3 innings of relief as the Post Falls Trojans edged the Lewiston Bengals 2-1 in the second game to earn a split of their 5A Inland Empire League-opening doubleheader Saturday at Church Field.

Lewiston won the first game 13-6.

In the nightcap, Post Falls (4-4, 1-1 5A IEL) posted two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Eli Gondo was hit by a pitch, Cole Rutherford walked and Spencer Zeller sacrificed them to second and third.

After Jacob Rutherford lined out, Gondo scored on a wild pitch, and Cole Rutherford came home on an error to put the Trojans ahead to stay.

Lewiston scored on an error in the first to open the scoring.

In the first game, Kyle Van Boeyen struck out eight in six innings for Lewiston. Spencer Zeller, Jacob Rutherford, Kaden Cripps and Tyson Rutherford each had two hits for the Trojans.

“We battled back after losing that first one,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. “If you can get a split, especially in Lewiston, it’s good. It’s always tough playing down there, and it gives us a little momentum and something to build on for the coming week.”

Dawson Bonfield drove in four runs with a pair of two-run singles for the Bengals, and George Lopez went 4 for 5 and scored twice.

Post Falls is scheduled to play host to Lake City on Tuesday in a league doubleheader.
