Breana Burke

UNLV softball

Burke, a junior from Coeur d’Alene High, was named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week, the school announced on Wednesday. The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department. Burke led the Rebels to their first three-game sweep over San Diego State in program history and first series win in San Diego since 2005. The junior shut down the Aztecs, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 17.2 innings pitched on the weekend. In her game two start, Burke turned in a complete-game performance, allowing just two runs, zero earned, on four hits in a 7-2 win — her fifth of the season. In Sunday’s 17-inning finale, Burke entered the game with one out in the seventh after SDSU had tied the game at three and got the final two outs to send the game to extras. She went on to pitch 10.0 scoreless frames, giving up just six hits and forcing the Aztecs to leave eight runners stranded, including runners on third three different innings. It her her career-high sixth win of the year. With the performance, Burke lowered her ERA to 1.53, which is a team best.
