Mitchell, Kaufman lead Lake City to tourney title

MERIDIAN — Led by tournament MVP Klaire Mitchell and all-tourney selection Ashley Kaufman, the Lake City Timberwolves won six matches without dropping a set on Saturday to capture the Rocky Mountain Invitational for the second year in a row.

Lake City beat Timberline of Boise in the championship match for the second straight year, this time 25-23, 25-19.

“Pretty amazing,” said Lake City coach Mike Summers, whose team won three matches on Friday, the first day of the tourney. “It was good to see the girls come down here and there was a little adversity, and the girls didn’t panic, they stayed calm and worked together as a team. When coaches asked them to make an adjustment, they did so. It was a pretty impressive weekend of volleyball — nine games in two days and you don’t drop a single set.”

In pool play on Saturday, Lake City beat Centennial 21-8, 21-16, Middleton 21-17, 21-18 and Columbia 21-9, 21-5.

The Timberwolves beat Highland of Pocatello 25-12, 25-11 in the quarterfinals and Centennial, again, 25-19, 25-8 in the semifinals.

Mitchell totaled 107 assists and Kaufman 63 kills on the day Saturday.

Reilley Chapman added 58 digs, Tanai Jenkins had more than a dozen blocks, Janae Rayborn more than a dozen kills. All but Jenkins are seniors.

“Our seniors did a nice job leading us in the tournament,” Summers said.

Lake City (21-1) plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday.

Linda Sheridan Classic

SPOKANE — Coeur d’Alene finished 3-2 end tied for fifth at the 64-team Linda Sheridan Classic, losing to King’s in the quarterfinals of the Platinum Bracket.

After beating Northwest Christian 25-19, 20-25, 15-13 on Friday night, Coeur d’Alene beat St. Maries 25-21, 25-11 and lost to Enumclaw 18-25, 25-19, 15-10 to conclude pool play.

In the Platinum Bracket, the Vikings beat Cascade 25-18, 15-25, 15-7 before being ousted by King’s 25-16, 12-25, 17-15.

Kelly Horning had 39 kills, 30 digs, 14 blocks and three aces in the tournament for Coeur d’Alene (14-6). Sarah Wilkey had 37 kills, 24 digs and six aces, Lauren Phillips 60 assists, 22 kills and seven aces, Taylin Rowley 50 assists, 26 digs, Olivia Haakenson 20 kills, Marina Erickson 25 digs and three aces, Katelyn Kinson nine digs.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday.

Post Falls went 4-2 and tied for 19th. In pool play, the Trojans beat North Central 25-8, 25-12, beat Colton 25-16, 25-15 and lost to Southridge 25-18, 25-15.

In Gold Bracket play, Post Falls beat East Valley 25-14, 25-19, beat Northwest Christian 25-22, 25-18 and lost to Lewis and Clark 25-21, 25-23 in the semifinals.

Tessa Sarff had 41 kills and four blocks in the tourney for Post Falls (13-11). Maya Blake had 23 kills and 10 aces, Kayla Mayo 62 assists, Courtney Finney 42 assists, Ali Carpenter 33 digs and eight aces, Megan Wood eight aces and three blocks, Maddy John three blocks.

“Overall I thought the girls played with a lot of heart,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “It’s been two long tournaments the last two weekends, and they showed a lot of grit.”

Sandpoint finished 3-2 and tied for 21st. In pool play, the Bulldogs lost to Gonzaga Prep 25-19, 22-25, 15-9, and beat Wenatchee 25-15, 25-23 and Clarkston 25-19, 25-27, 15-9.

In Gold Bracket play, Sandpoint beat Ferris 25-21, 21-25, 20-18 before losing to Lewis and Clark 25-12, 25-19.

Lakeland went 4-3, losing in the finals of the Silver Bracket and finishing 34th.

In pool play, Lakeland beat Wilbur-Creston 25-20, 25-5, lost to Graham-Kapowsin 25-19, 21-25, 15-13 and lost to Bellarmine Prep 25-21, 26-24.

In Silver Bracket play, the Hawks beat Colville 25-16, 25-12, beat the Gonzaga Prep JV 25-15, 25-15 and beat Troy 25-21, 26-24 before losing to Oakesdale 25-21, 20-25, 18-16 in the championship match.

Timberlake went 3-4, losing in the finals of the Bronze Bracket and finishing 49th.

In pool play, Timberlake lost to Mead 25-18, 25-19, lost to Rogers-Puyallup 25-10, 21-25, 16-14 and lost to Troy 25-19, 26-24.

In Bronze Bracket play, the Tigers beat St. John-Endicott 27-25, 25-16, beat Kellogg 25-17, 25-15 and beat Wilbur-Creston 25-17, 25-15, then lost to Granger in the championship match 25-20, 25-17.

St. Maries went 1-4, losing in the quarterfinals of the Bronze Bracket to finish 53rd.

In pool play, St. Maries lost to Enumclaw 25-17, 25-14, Coeur d’Alene 25-21, 25-11 and Northwest Christian 25-21, 25-11.

In the Bronze Bracket, the Lumberjacks beat Chewelah 25-23, 25-21, then lost to North Central 18-25, 25-20, 15-12.

Lakeside

POST FALLS — Josie Scribner had 21 kills, 11 digs, two blocks and two aces as the host Jaguars beat the Knights 25-13, 28-26, 25-18 in North Star League play at Post Falls Middle School.

Rachel Schroeder added 30 assists, eight digs, two blocks and two aces for Genesis Prep (5-4, 4-2 NSL). Emily Martinez had 15 digs, Trinity Morrow nine digs, five kills and two aces.

“The girls played great against a team who has a great defense,” Genesis Prep coach Paula Thurston said. “Our defense was the best it’s been this season. Lakeside put up a good fight.”

On Friday, Genesis Prep lost to Priest River at home 25-6, 25-13, 26-24.

Genesis Prep travels to Wallace on Tuesday.

Alyssa SiJohn had 17 assists and two aces, Glory Olson four kills and three blocks for Lakeside (4-6, 3-4), which hosts Mullan on Thursday.

“We just gave away too many points,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said.

COEUR d’ALENE — Julia Haag had 12 kills and three blocks for the Royals in a 25-27, 25-10, 25-21, 25-14 Mountain Christian League win over Country Christian of Pasco at Holy Family Catholic School.

Hailey LePard had 12 digs and Kaylee Prosch 25 assists for North Idaho Christian (6-5, 2-3 MCL), which plays at Christian Center of Hayden on Tuesday.
