John Douglas ‘Doug’ Shacklett

John Douglas “Doug” Shacklett was born on Jan. 5, 1930, in Fircrest, Wash. He passed away on Sept. 27, 2018, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

Doug’s passion was building and in 1959 he started his own construction business and did remodel, home construction and commercial jobs. In 1962 he moved his growing family to Albuquerque, N.M., to accept a job offer at Robert Parks and Association, a general contractor. His job was doing the estimating and overseeing commercial and school projects in the state.

In 1964, he started his career with Kaiser Aluminum Corporation, moving through several positions until he was regional manager in charge of manufacturing and sales for local and satellite operations in eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana and parts of Canada. He moved to Spokane, Wash. in 1967. He retired from Kaiser in 1984 and moved to Selah, Wash. to build and co-own a Christian personal care center, River View Manor. He was administrator of the facility until it was sold in 1993.

In 1995, Doug and his wife Barbara moved to Idaho to be closer to family. Doug started a cabinet business and also built homes for himself and others; his last home built while he was in his 70s was for his daughter and her husband in 2003.

During his younger years Doug was involved in the Navy Reserves, was a master gardener and taught Sunday school. He was a member of the Catholic Church and was involved in the Knights of Columbus. He liked to collect antiques during his travels and refinished many beautiful pieces.

Retirement was spent enjoying his family, traveling in the RV to see more of the country, meeting with friends for coffee and chat, spoiling his cat Princess and enjoying his time at home with Barbara. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed.

Doug is survived by his wife Barbara Ann (Ludwig), who he met in Fircrest when he delivered newspapers to her family’s home. They married on Jan. 19, 1951, and had six children: daughters Julie Shacklett (who preceded him in death), Gail (Cal) Vincent of Spokane, Wash., Debra (Jeff) Sjostrom of Athol, Idaho, Karen Shacklett (who also preceded him in death); and sons; Robert (Jill) Shacklett of Spirit Lake, Idaho and Michael (Anne) Shacklett of Moreno Valley, Calif. They have 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, with one more on the way.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marcella; his brother, Dean; and his grandchildren, Andrew, Nicole and Audrey.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family requests that memorials be sent to Schneidmiller House at 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815. Doug spent his last days here being cared for by kind and caring staff, allowing his family to feel at peace and spend their time with him.

Yates Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
