Hayden Lake’s Yeats wins women’s age-group title

NELSON MANDELA BAY, South Africa — Dexter Yeats, 73, of Hayden Lake won the women’s 70-74 age group at the 2018 Ironman World Championship triathlon on Sept. 1.

Approximately 1,600 women were registered to compete as the event came to the African continent for the first time.

Yeats finished the half-ironman in 7 hours, 25 minutes, 55 seconds (50:34 on the swim, 3:33:34 on the bike and 2:48:50 on the run). The race encompassed a 1.2-mile swim that started at King’s Beach and proceeded with an open-water swim in the Indian Ocean, followed by a one-loop, 56-mile bike course that took athletes around the Nelson Mandela Bay area. The event capped off with a two-lap, 13.1-mile run as athletes finished to energetic crowds at Hobie Beach.

Qualification is already underway for the 2019 Ironman World Championship in Nice, France.

Montana State football coach Choate undergoes emergency appendectomy

Montana State football coach Jeff Choate underwent an emergency medical procedure Sunday morning, according to an email obtained by The Missoulian newspaper on Monday.

The email, originating from the Bobcat Quarterback Club, said Choate had an appendectomy one day following Montana State’s 45-14 loss at South Dakota State, the Missoulian reported. The email states that Choate, a St. Maries High grad and former Post Falls High football coach and athletic director, is “doing good,” but that a chapter meeting scheduled for Monday night in Billings had been canceled and that BQC members are encouraged to “let him rest.”

Further, the Missoulian said, the email told Quarterback Club members that they “may have noticed from (Choate’s) halftime interview” during Saturday’s game that “he was not normal. He was obviously sick the whole game.”

Choate did participate in a postgame interview session outside the Bobcats’ locker room at Dykhouse Stadium. The team’s chartered flight back to Bozeman took off from Sioux Falls, S.D., in the hours following the game.

It was announced Sunday night that Choate’s weekly Monday morning news conference had been postponed. It is unclear when the news conference will be rescheduled for this week.

Montana State (1-1) is scheduled to host Wagner on Saturday.

The two-game flex pack includes a ticket to the game against Montana and one additional 2018 home game of your choice. The flex pack is available in stadium reserved sections ($54 per package) and general admission sections ($44 per package).
