COEUR d’ALENE — Now in its 44th year, the Idaho Governor’s Cup returns to Coeur d’Alene today. This year’s event at The Coeur d’Alene Resort will include more than 600 participants and lasts through Saturday evening.

The Governor’s Cup was established by Gov. Cecil Andrus in 1974 to provide funds for Idaho high school students to attend Idaho universities and colleges. The fundraiser began as a small golf tournament but has evolved into a fun weekend offering golf, fly fishing, shotgun sports, and plenty of socializing.

Idaho Governor’s Cup academic scholarships are $3,000 per year for up to four years, and career-technical scholarships are $3,000 per year for up to three years.

This year the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization awarded scholarships to 36 Idaho high school grads, including Lydia Gross of Hayden, Dylan Miller of St. Maries, and Sheldon Trogden of Mullan. Gross is a Coeur d’Alene High School graduate attending Boise State University. Miller is a Lumberjack alum attending Lewis-Clark State College. Trogden has built on his education at Mullan Junior-Senior High School by entering a technical program at North Idaho College, and plans to own his own business in specialty welding.

All the scholarship funds come from private donations, most of which are raised during the annual event.

Gov. Butch Otter began the practice of rotating the fundraiser between Coeur d’Alene and Sun Valley. More than 100 companies sponsor the event, including premier sponsors Hecla Mining and Idaho Forest Group, silver sponsor Avista Utilities, and hole sponsor Stimson Lumber.

This year also saw the first Cecil D. Andrus Excellence in Education Scholarship for an Idaho student planning on teaching in Idaho public schools. Capital High School graduate Camryn Layer won the inaugural scholarship, and attends the University of Idaho.

“For 12 years we have come together to raise money and then award scholarships for deserving Idaho students,” Otter said. “The first lady and I are thrilled to lead this effort, one last time, as we seek to expand educational opportunities for a new group of Idaho students eager to take advantage of all the educational opportunities available to them at the community colleges and universities across our great state.”
