PORT ANGELES, Wash. — North Idaho College played perennial Northwest Athletic Conference power Peninsula College tough in a 2-1 loss on Sunday in a nonconference match.

“This was our best preseason result against Peninsula College in several years,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said. “Both of their goals came during scrambles in front of the goal after a deflection. We just didn’t seem to find a way to clear the ball.”

NIC’s goal was a long range direct kick by Cidney Bauwens from about 40 yards out that the PC keeper tipped into the crossbar, but it still landed in the goal on the bounce. It was Bauwens’ first goal of her collegiate career.

“Peninsula is a much stronger team than Tacoma (whom the Cardinals tied 2-2 on Saturday) and we had to learn to play the ball much quicker than our game yesterday,” Hogan said. “(NIC goalkeeper Kari) Bromley came up big on a couple of 1v1 saves and one point-blank shot. The referee was so impressed he told me he thought she was the player of the match.”

NIC (0-2-2) opens NWAC play at home with games Friday at 2 p.m. vs. Treasure Valley and Saturday at noon vs. Blue Mountain, both at Eisenwinter Field on the NIC campus.
