PROP 2: Fairness needed

| October 31, 2018 1:45 AM

I have received several calls from people seeking advice on how to vote on Proposition 2. Some have read the arguments for and against the Medicaid expansion bill. Their confusion is the result of solid arguments on both sides of the proposition. Most agree there should be reasonable healthcare coverage for all Idahoans. However, they feel strongly that all Idahoans should be accountable in the handling of public funds.

While a measure of subsidized assistance would be necessary, those who benefit from the subsidies should learn responsibility by paying a minimal premium based on a percentage of their income. (Suggested 2-4 percent). Also there should be a small co-pay to help them learn respect for the value of the healthcare and the dollar.

Only legal citizens should be able to participate in the subsidized plan.

Illnesses due to destructive lifestyle choices should not be covered by subsidies.

Regardless of the outcome of the election on Proposition 2 we the citizens of Idaho should continue to work with and pressure the Legislature to adopt a plan that is fair, reasonable, and cost effective that would provide good healthcare coverage.
