Thomas ‘Buck’ Ryan, 75

Thomas “Buck” Ryan died in Hayden, Idaho, at Schneidmiller Hospice House with his daughters by his side on Oct. 10, 2018, due to complications with lung cancer. He was 75 years old.

Buck was born on Sept. 25, 1943, in Prairie du Chien, Wis., to parents Hilma and Cletus Ryan, the third of four children. The family soon moved to St. Maries, Idaho, where Buck’s father owned a sawmill. After his father’s death, Hilma moved the young family to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Buck graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1961 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho.

In 1975 he bought his house in Hayden and spent the next 40 years enhancing his piece of Idaho. He married Martha Maynard in 1976. They were married for eight years and had two daughters, Glenna and Colleen.

He belonged to the Northwest Laborers Union and spent more than 30 years in the construction industry. He retired early in 2000 so that he could attend every game during his daughter’s senior year of college soccer at the University of Montana. Buck was fiercely loyal to his daughters and had many wonderful lifelong friendships. Buck was a man of many talents including woodworking, restoring cars, home renovation and hunting. In the summer, his favorite place was on his handmade porch swing overlooking his property in Hayden.

Buck is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Glenna and Land Tawney and their two children, of Missoula, Mont.; his daughter, Colleen Ryan of Wenatchee, Wash.; and his brother, Jerry Ryan of The Dalles, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Jim Ryan; and his sister, Jeni Gerig.

At Buck’s request, no funeral services will be held.
