Free training for parents on active shooter events

| October 25, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Families and local residents are invited to take part in an interactive, educational parent training at Lake City High School auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6-8 p.m.

Retired Pierce County, Wash., law enforcement officer Jesus Villahermosa will bring his 32 years of experience, and knowledge as an active shooter instructor, to provide a heightened awareness and knowledge of how to deal with an active lethal threat event involving a lockdown situation at your student’s school.

The event is free for parents, guardians and community members. No reservations are required. The event is not designed for students or children. Call ahead to reserve free, on-site childcare for kids age five and up, at 208-664-8241 or info@cdaschools.org. Light snacks will be available.

High school students will have training assemblies in school with Villahermosa on Oct. 31.

The training session’s learning objectives are to:

- Teach parents to understand why lockdown plans are critical to have in place in their local schools

- Discuss and learn from numerous actual national school shooting events and learn what survival tactics lead to death versus those that lead to life

- Learn L.E.A.S.T. (Lockdown, Evacuation and Survival Tactics) and understand why their student should know these tactics

- Understand the needs of their local school during a lockdown event

- Realize the importance of having a conversation with their student before an incident occurs

- Provide those on the scene of an active killer event the tools necessary to increase their survival rate

- Save lives in the event of an actual threat

This event is presented by Coeur d’Alene Public Schools with support from a major grant from Kootenai Health. Lake City High School is located at 6101 Ramsey Road in Coeur d’Alene.
