COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene High School has updated its end-of-day policies after an incident on Friday.

According to district spokesman Scott Maben, a student who usually rides the bus home did not get on board the bus Friday afternoon. The student in question usually walks with staff and other students to the bus loading area.

“On Friday, school staff did not see this student when they checked the classroom before the group headed to the bus area. After the other students boarded buses, staff did not return to the classroom where the student was later located,” Maben said.

An hour and a half later, when the student had not arrived at an after-school program, a school administrator was notified and then found the student sitting in a classroom alone. The student had been free to walk in and out of the room, and got a drink of water at one point, said Maben.

Maben said law enforcement was not involved in the incident.

“The CHS staff has reviewed this incident and in response has updated student departure procedures for the end of the day. We are sorry for this incident and the concern it caused the student’s family,” said the spokesman.
