GRANGEVILLE — Kelly Horning totaled 27 kills, nine blocks and 11 digs as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings rallied from two sets down to beat the Eagle Mustangs 21-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-17, 15-8 in a state 5A play-in match Saturday.

Sarah Wilkey added 12 kills and 13 digs for Coeur d’Alene (18-9), which advanced to the state 5A tourney at Ridgevue High in Nampa beginning Friday. The Vikings open at 10 a.m. vs. District 3 champion Skyview (16-0) of Nampa.

Taylin Rowley had 29 assists, Lauren Phillips 27 for Coeur d’Alene, the Region 1 runners-up, who won its third straight win-or-go-home match in five days.

“We started out kinda flat in the first set, and midway through the second we got our game on,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “In the third game we came out on fire and kept rolling.

“The first two sets we were doing things we don’t normally do. We finally got dialed in, blocked better and hit smarter.”

Curtis said Horning, a Montana commit and the lone Viking with previous state experience, was key on Saturday.

“Today she was huge; she’s the one who got us to state today,” Curtis said. “I love her intensity and her attitude.”

Eagle, the fifth-place team from District 3, finished 11-8.
