COEUR d’ALENE — When Reilley Chapman stepped back to serve in the third set Tuesday night, her Lake City Timberwolves team trailed 11-7.

The next serve by any of the Timberwolves will be sometime next Friday morning in Nampa.

Chapman, a senior libero, served the final 18 points of the match as top-seeded Lake City finished off the third-seeded Lewiston Bengals 25-11, 25-16, 25-11 in 51 minutes in the championship match of the 5A Region 1 volleyball tournament at Lake City.

“It was my last time playing on this court, so I wanted to go all out, and serve as aggressive as possible,” Chapman said. “It’s nice to switch things up a little bit, because you spend so much time in a defensive position, so it’s nice to get back there and be able to attack for once.”

Lake City (29-1), which won its third straight regional title, advances to state Oct. 26-27 at Ridgevue High. The Timberwolves will open at 8 a.m. PDT vs. the third-place finisher from the District 3 tournament.

“I thought Reilley did a fantastic job over the course of the match, not only defensively, but in that third set, going on that long service run. That was impressive,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “Just working the seams; we felt the spaces between the passers in the back row, they were leaving those a little wider open than normal. We’ll have to get her some ice for her shoulder, I guess.”

Lewiston will play at No. 2 seed Coeur d’Alene (16-9) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for second place and a berth in a Saturday state play-in match at Grangeville. Coeur d’Alene eliminated No. 4 seed Post Falls (14-15) with a 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 victory Tuesday night at home.

Chapman finished with 15 digs and three aces for Lake City. Ashley Kaufman had nine kills and three aces, Janae Rayborn five kills, Klaire Mitchell five kills, 16 assists, 12 digs and two blocks, Tanai Jenkins four blocks, Alexis Keylon three aces, Kate DuCoeur two blocks.

Lake City scored the first 10 points of the match, nine of them on serves by Rayborn, and won the first set in 15 minutes.

Lake City fell behind early in the second and third sets, but after cleaning some things up, stormed back to win both sets with relative ease.

Keylon had all three of her aces in the second set, two of them in a run where the T-Wolves went from down 6-4 to up 9-6. Kaufman served an ace on set point.

Lake City trailed 9-3 in the third set before getting going. Chapman served all three of her aces in that final run and Jenkins, a sophomore middle blocker, chipped in with a quick-set kill and a block. Fittingly, Chapmans served an ace on championship point.

“I liked the first set, how we started with our intensity and our tempo,” Summers said. “Everything was clicking. The second and third set we started a little slower, especially in that third set we got out of system, out of our comfort zone, took a timeout and refocused, and came out of that timeout and took control of the match.”

Lewiston, which won just one match during 5A Inland Empire League play, advanced to the title match by surprising Coeur d’Alene in five sets on Saturday.

“Had we played the same way today that we did Saturday, we would have given them a run for their money,” first-year Lewiston coach Mandi Hare said. “If we come and play our own game, we can play with them, but we just have to focus on ourselves. They’re a fast-tempo team, and we have to block well and serve-receive well against a team like that.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Kelly Horning had 16 kills and six blocks as the host Vikings beat the Trojans 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-16 in a 5A Region 1 tournament loser-out match.

Lauren Phillips added 17 assists and six aces for Coeur d’Alene (16-9). Taylin Rowley had 17 assists and 12 digs, Sarah Wilkey 10 kills and 12 digs, Maggie Bloom six aces, Liliana Hare four blocks.

“We stepped it up on ball control tonight, which allowed us to run our offense,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Our ball control and our serves were key for us tonight.”

Tessa Sarff had 10 kills and five blocks, Maya Blake 12 kills, Courtney Finney 19 assists and two digs, Kayla Mayo 15 assists and three aces, Megan Wood 11 digs, and two aces for Post Falls, which finishes 14-15.

“Coeur d’Alene was pretty scrappy tonight,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “We hit the ball hard, but they were picking everything up. We got a little behind in the third set, but couldn’t battle back. Coeur d’Alene is a tough team and played really hard.”

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Lewiston on Thursday for a berth in a state play-in match on Saturday.
