COEUR d’ALENE — The message was a simple one from North Idaho College coach Dan Hogan to Autumn Stewart during a wild Northwest Athletic Conference East Region match at Eisenwinter Field on Saturday.

“Go score a goal.”

Message received, and delivered.

Stewart broke a scoreless tie in the 81st minute for the Cardinals, who advenged an early season loss, beating the Yakima Valley Yaks 2-0.

“Autumn was subbed back into the game in the 75th minute,” Hogan said. “She asked me if there were any extra instructions for her, and I said ‘Go score a goal.’ About seven minutes later, Ellory Ferris fed her a ball behind the Yak defenders. Stewart used her speed to dribble ahead of the recovering defenders and as the Yakima Valley keeper came off her line, Stewart slipped the ball past her into the right side of the net.”

In the 69th minute, Yakima Valley forward Harley Hendry — a Lakeland High product — received a red card for throwing a punch at an NIC defender, resulting in Hendry’s ejection from the game and leaving the Yaks one player short.

“The game was physical and literally hard fought,” Hogan said. “I don’t know if the red card changed the momentum of the game at the time, but it definitely made it harder for Yakima to generate much of an attack.”

NIC (8-3-4, 8-1-2 NWAC) leads the East Region with 26 points. Yakima Valley is 9-4-1, 6-4-1.

NIC travels to Columbia Basin College of Pasco on Wednesday.

First half — none. Second half — 1, NIC, Autumn Stewart (unassisted), 81:54. 2, Zoe Lee (Linnea Pretzer), 84:38.

Shots on goal — YVCC 5, NIC 4.

Saves — YVCC, Brynlee Ward 2; NIC, Kaysha Bailey 5.
