St. Maries clinches top seed to 2A districts

GRANGEVILLE — Kaci Haeg had 17 kills and four aces as the St. Maries Lumberjacks wrapped up the No. 1 seed to the 2A District 1-2 tournament by sweeping the Grangeville Bulldogs 25-22, 25-11, 25-17 in Central Idaho League play on Saturday.

Dakotah Wilks added 29 assists for St. Maries (14-14, 3-1 CIL), which begins play at districts Tuesday at Genesee. The Lumberjacks play at 6:30 p.m. vs. the loser of the match between No. 2 seed Orofino and No. 3 Grangeville, scheduled for 5.

Grangeville finished 0-4 in league.

St. Maries shared the CIL title with Orofino, but earned the top seed based on more sets won in their two head-to-head matches. It was the third straight year the Lumberjacks and Maniacs tied for the league title. It’s the fifth straight year St. Maries has won or shared the league title.

COEUR d’ALENE — Klaire Mitchell had 25 assists and 12 digs as the top-seeded Timberwolves swept the fourth-seeded Trojans 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Janae Rayborn added six kills and six aces for Lake City (28-1), which plays host to third-seeded Lewiston on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the championship match. Post Falls travels to No. 2 Coeur d’Alene in a loser-out match Tuesday at 6:30.

Tanai Jenkins had six kills and two blocks for the T-Wolves, and Reilley Chapman had 15 digs.

“We had to fight through some adversity in all of the sets,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “The girls had to battle back from a few points down here and there. We need to come out a little more focused, and not take for granted that teams are going to give us the victory.”

Coeur d’Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings had 12 aces as a team, but also had 13 service errors and lost 25-27, 25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 15-11 to the Bengals in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

“Our serving was a blessing and a curse,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said.

Kelly Horning shined for Coeur d’Alene (15-9) with 21 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and three aces. Lauren Phillips had 21 assists, Taylin Rowley 19 assists, Sarah Wilkey five aces, Liliana Hare six blocks.

Maddy Skinner had 10 kills and five blocks for Lewiston. Hally Wells had 11 kills, Morgan Moran 17 digs, Peyten Ely four aces.

Coeur d’Alene beat Lewiston both times in 5A Inland Empire League play, dropping just one set.

“They’re a scrappy team; they got up a lot of our stuff,” Curtis said of the Bengals.
