SWIFT CURRENT, Saskatchewan — Defense and solid goaltending helped the Spokane Chiefs shut down the defending WHL champions and earn a 4-1 victory over the host Broncos on Friday night.

Bailey Brkin had 30 saves to earn his third win of the young season, and the Chiefs (4-1-0-2, second in the U.S. Division) never trailed after Eli Zummack scored with two minutes remaining in the first period.

After killing off a four-minute power play, Spokane added to its lead as Carter Chorney tipped in a shot eight minutes into the second frame. Third-period goals by Jake McGrew and Riley Woods helped the Chiefs close out the Broncos.

Spokane continues its string of six games in nine days with a 6 p.m. game today at Moose Jaw.
