NIC to host humanities conference Nov. 3

The community is invited to the third annual 2018 Northwest Undergraduate Conference in Humanities, which will be held at North Idaho College from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

The conference gives undergraduate students from around the region the opportunity to present their work in a public and professional academic setting. The keynote speaker this year is University of Idaho Distinguished Professor of English Kim Barnes.

The conference registration fee, which includes snacks throughout the day, lunch, and dinner, is $35 per person. The fee to attend just the dinner/keynote is $25 per person. (These fees also help cover the cost of publicity, facilities, and the keynote speaker.)

Barnes was born in Lewiston and one week later, returned with her mother to their small line-shack on Orofino Creek, where her father worked as a logger. The majority of her childhood was spent in the isolated settlements and cedar camps along the North Fork of Idaho’s Clearwater River. She was the first member of her family to attend college.

Barnes is a recipient of the PEN/Jerard Award in nonfiction for her first memoir, In the Wilderness, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Hungry for the World, her second memoir, was a Borders Books New Voices Selection. Barnes is also the author of three novels: “Finding Caruso;” “A Country Called Home,” winner of the 2009 PEN Center USA Literary Award in Fiction and named a Best Book of 2008 by The Washington Post, The Kansas City Star, and The Oregonian; and “In the Kingdom of Men,” listed among the Best Books of 2012 by San Francisco Chronicle and The Seattle Times. Barnes is a professor of English in the MFA program at the University of Idaho.
