Raymond was born to William and Melva Schaal in Oakland, Calif. He was an active young man playing many sports of which baseball was his favorite. After high school, Ray attended UC Berkeley, where he was a member of the Acacia Fraternity and was a coxswain for the rowing team. He graduated with a degree in political science and history, and for the rest of his life was a huge Cal Bear fan. Ray then continued his education at Vanderbilt Law School, from which he graduated in 1961. After being admitted to the bar, Ray entered the Army, where he served as a JAG officer.

Raymond married Helen (Kruger) March 1, 1969. They moved to Lakeport, Calif., and he was initially a public defender and then opened a private law practice. This is where he developed many lifelong friendships with community members and clients alike. Ray was always passionate about his work and prided himself on providing superior service for all his clients.

Ray then became Judge Schaal for Lake County, Calif. He loved this important position and was dedicated to the people of Lake County. Ray was a highly respected traveling Judge for years. After his stint as Judge Schaal, he was appointed in as the district attorney to Lake County. In 1986 Ray transferred to Napa County, where he worked until retirement as chief prosecutor level 4. Ray ended his 38-year law career with his favorite job as a prosecutor.

Ray is survived by his wife, Helen Schaal; his children, Christopher (Lynda), Graham (Sheila) and Jennifer (Jeff) Fletcher; and grandchildren, Cody, Lincoln, William, Lillian and Jeremy.

Ray had a passion for watching his children and grandkids play sports throughout his lifetime. He was a Rotarian and Elks member for most of his life. He prided himself on being a little league coach for many years. He will always be remembered as a die-hard ’49er and Giants fan. He officiated numerous weddings of family and friends.

Ray was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. He had many happy and fun years with friends in Lake County, Napa Valley, and in Post Falls, Idaho during his retirement. After a long sickness, Ray died of natural causes surrounded by his family. At his request, there will be no services.
