Cd'A, Lake City to play for regional title

| October 7, 2018 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The goal for the day was simple for Coeur d’Alene, set the tone early and often in its 5A Region 1 tournament opener on Saturday.

Mission accomplished.

Now, the Vikings sit a game away from another goal, a state tournament berth.

Sarah Swider scored off an assist from Jordan Roth two minutes into the match, then scored again in the 73rd minute to send the Vikings past the Lewiston Bengals 5-1 at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Sarah connected on a lot of passes and that resulted in a lot of chances at the goal,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg, whose team outshot Lewiston 19-4. “Sarah really got us going today and kept our energy up. I was really proud of the way she played today. We wanted to come out and set the tone with the high press, and the girls did that and it created a lot of chances. The girls played hard today.”

COEUR d’ALENE — Kali McKelips was in the right place at the right time often in the first half of the Timberwolves’ 5A Region 1 tournament opener, finishing with three assists in a win over the Trojans at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“That was great to see from Kali,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “She was serving the ball to all the right places, and could have had a few goals of her own, but was finding her teammates.”

Rieken recorded a hat trick, Madi Lasher two goals for Lake City (12-2), which advances to host Coeur d’Alene in the regional championship match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

“When Chloe (Teets) and Maddy (Smith) get her (Rieken) the ball, and add in Madi (Lasher), they’re a handful,” Ruchti said. “We were able to finish out of the air like we wanted to do today.”

Lake City swept the season series with Coeur d’Alene, outscoring the Vikings 9-1.

“We know them in and out,” said Ruchti of Coeur d’Alene. “(Coeur d’Alene coach) Andy (Vredenburg) and I have coached with and against each other at the club level. It’s going to be a classic Timberwolves/Vikings game. Whatever we’ve done in the regular season, it won’t matter.”
