Pat O’Neal Estes, 84

Pat O’Neal Estes, of Hayden, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, surrounded by family. Pat entered this world, the third child in a family of seven, in Mesa, Ariz., on March 13, 1934, to Paul and Beulah (Bayes) Estes.

He attended all his school years in Mesa, graduating from the old Mesa High School on May 23, 1952. Pat served his country for two years in the Arizona National Guard, then continued serving for four years in the U.S. Navy, being honorably discharged June 4, 1956.

Pat married his sweetheart, Helen Louise Smith, on May 13, 1958, at the First Baptist Chapel in Silver City, N.M. In Aug. of 1958, together they joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa Temple on Dec. 21, 1959. He began working for the Mesa Fire Department in 1957, and retired in 1977 as assistant chief training officer. He moved to Hayden and continued his career at the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. He retired from the City of Coeur d’Alene in 1998.

Pat led a very active life, serving in the Hayden Water Association, doing extensive genealogy work and hunting with his family and friends.

He enjoyed serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including two service missions with his wife, and as managers of the Spokane dry pack cannery and Carrollton, Texas dry pack cannery. He also lovingly spent a year serving in the Spokane Temple with his eternal companion.

Pat is survived by his eternal companion, Helen Estes in Idaho; Christine (Dave) Hansen in Oregon; Cheryl Baxter in Idaho; Cari (Dan) Austin in Idaho; Pat Estes II in Texas; Perry (Janice) Estes in Idaho; Celeste (Kevin) Hood in Virginia; Paul (Sandra) Estes in Texas; Parley Estes in Alaska; Phillip (Julie) Estes in Idaho; Parker (Sarah) Estes in Idaho; 53 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Pat is preceded in death by his father, John Paul Estes; his mother, Beulah Agnes Bayes; three brothers and one sister.

There will be a viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, at Yates Funeral Home — Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene. A celebration of Pat’s life and legacy will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, with the viewing beginning at 11 a.m., at the LDS Church, 2293 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d’Alene. A graveside with military honors will follow the funeral at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens, 7315 N. Government Way, Coeur d’ Alene.
