COEUR d’ALENE — Most of the answers to questions about the new parking garage in downtown Coeur d’Alene are in.

But one biggie isn’t: What the heck do we call this thing?

“One suggestion is Heart of the City Parking Garage,” chipped in Troy Tymesen, city administrator. Tymesen said the city is open to other names.

How about Paved Paradise? Maybe not.

Whatever it ends up being called, here’s a Q&A update on the parking garage now in the late stages of construction. The facility is rising on Coeur d’Alene Avenue between Third and Fourth streets. Answers are provided by Tony Berns of ignite cda, the urban renewal agency partnering with the city on the project.

Q: According to a story in The Press early last December, construction was scheduled to begin Dec. 15 — but the article said there could be a glitch and work might start later. When did construction actually begin?

A: Construction began on Jan. 15, 2018.

Q: When is the parking garage scheduled to open?

A: Soft opening of the garage is planned for Oct. 22 with an official opening planned for Nov. 1.

Q: How many spaces will it have, on how many levels?

A: 4½ levels of parking with 350 spaces

Q: Where will the ingress and egress be?

A: Day and monthly parking customers will enter and exit off of CDA Avenue.

Secured monthly parking customers (90 spaces, plus or minus) utilizing the lower floor of the garage will enter off of 3rd Street.

Pedestrians will enter the garage on either the northeast (Fourth & CDA) or southwest (Third Street) corners of the building.

Elevator access to the garage will be on the southwest corner of the building (Third Street).

Q: What do you expect the final cost to be?

A: Estimated final cost of the garage initiative is $7,641,000.
